As timeshare owners at Hotel Finisterra (which means Land’s End) in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, we were pleasantly surprised to observe the great retrofitting and remodeling taking place.

In October, 2013, my wife and I ventured off Holland America Line’s m s Westerdam when it dropped anchor near the harbor. We checked in at the timeshare office and received a full tour of the older sections that face the harbor, and then went to the Pacific side to view them.

The totally refurbished units are very tastefully arranged and furnished. The harbor side has a new bakery and two new restaurants, Tortuga Beach and the Don Diego. The latter provides a 180-degree view of the harbor and downtown scenes. The new owners, Sandos Group, can be proud of setting a new standard for Land’s End.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

For most of the early 20th Century, Cabo San Lucas was a remote fishing village. Following World War II, several Hollywood stars discovered the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula. They flew in on private planes or ventured in by private yachts to enjoy the setting, sportfishing expeditions, and privacy.

In 1955, Don Luis Buines, a Spanish native, arrived to manage the new Impresas Pando tuna cannery at Cabo. He was impressed with the views and the excitement of catching all species of fish. In 1958, ex-U.S. Air Force pilot Luis Coppola put Hotel Finisterra near the end of the cape. It faced what is now the marina to the north. Luis Bulnes responded by constructing Hotel Solmar further south on the Pacific side of the Baja. Sports’ fishing was the major attraction.

As yet, there was no harbor. A large sand dune blocked what is now Cabo’s harbor. Dredging equipment was brought to Cabo to cut away the dune, allowing ocean-going ferryboats from the Mexican mainland to enter. Although the marina is open for traffic, it can’t accommodate large ocean-going cruise ships, so they drop anchor offshore and load passengers in small craft for the trip to the dock.

In December, 1957, construction began on the 1,000-mile-long paved road connecting Baja Sur with the U.S. This massive project was completed in 1973. Airports were improved and the San José del Cabo airport, 51.2 km (about 32 miles) from Hotel Finisterra, was modernized to handle major airline traffic.

TWO SECTIONS

Hotel Finisterra was built in two sections, one facing the harbor and the new addition on a rocky cliff facing the Pacific. Many of the hotel’s 300 units are timeshares. The Pacific-facing units were apparently renovated in the early 1990s. Open houses greeted individuals who were offered a 20-year timeshare contract. The timeshares range from a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit with an efficiency kitchen and small living room to units of almost 1,000 square feet with two bathrooms, a full living room, and an outside porch facing the Pacific and the Palapa restaurant, bar, and swimming area.

For years Hotel Finisterra and Hotel Solmar were the sole occupants on the Pacific side of a rocky ridge. However, Cabo San Lucas soon became a destination resort and hundreds of condominiums or timeshare units were constructed along the corridor to San José del Cabo.

An artist colony sprang up at Todos los Santos, which is located almost on the Tropic of Cancer. The home of the famous “Hotel California” of rock-‘n’-roll fame, Todos is just a short drive (78 km, about 48 miles) on a paved road from Cabo.

ACTIVITIES IN CABO

Nightlife abounds in Cabo. A stroll down the main street offers music, listening, and whatever. Rock star Sammy Hagar established the famous “Cabo Wabo.” Restaurants include classic Mexican, Italian, and the fish houses—our favorites, including El Coral, where you can watch your fish being grilled to choice accompanied by Mexican music. The Mi Casa is one of our favorite Mexican spots.

The boardwalk along the marina forms a mile-long loop from one end of the marina almost to the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). As you stroll on the boardwalk, scores of individuals will offer jewelry, trinkets, tee shirts, apparel, and hats of every type and style. Several Mexican restaurants face the marina, as does the newly refurbished Wyndham Hotel. A small jazz club, Two for the ROAD, makes the night for jazz enthusiasts.

The marina has charter-fishing boats of every size and budget for hire, and water taxies waiting to take you to any spot in the area. A “pirate” ship skirts the famous lovers’ beach and the world-famous promontory El Arco. This magnificent arch is the southernmost point of the Baja Sur. Visitors to Cabo make sure to sail by this distinguished icon.

WATCHING WHALES

One of our favorite trips is to board a whale-watcher vessel. The whales winter in the area from November to late February. What fun to watch these oceanic monsters with baby whales along mama’s side!

For a real whale-watching tour, take the charter flight from Cabo to the Bahia Magdalena and observe baby whales by the score. We have been told that the male whales protect the northern entry point of the bay to chase away sharks. Scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, sunning, and of course watching the Cabo dolphins or pesky pelicans pick up fish scraps from fishing boats all makes for an enjoyable visit. Just gazing at all the private yachts is fun. Occasionally you may see some of the largest in the world.

For the novice, Los Cabos Magazine (online at www.loscabosmagazine.com/) is a handy English-language guide to the area. Also visit the Los Cabos Tourism Board Web site, www.visitloscabos.travel/. And for us, we bid farewell in 2014, as that ends our timeshare lease at Hotel Finisterra.
