Featured Review: Cold Spring Resort

My daughter chose Cold Spring Resort in Ashland, NH to exchange into because of the proximity to skiing and New Hampshire's snowmobile trails. Then she was unable to get vacation time. So Mom and Pop, who prefer exchanges to ocean properties, ended up in the Lakes Region, just south of the White Mountains, for one of the coldest weeks on record!

This part of New Hampshire is alive and well in January. Most restaurants are open, shops have great prices and quality goods for sale. Go over to Meredith and other towns on the lakes and check out the many crafts for sale. Even the hardware stores are full of fascinating displays. Plymouth is the closest "large town." From our unit we could see the lights of Plymouth State University at night. Ashland is located right off 1-93, so a run north for skiing or south to Concord is very easy.

On the downside, New Hampshire's back roads have lots of frost heave, rolling curves and experience blowing snow continually. With our love of the openness of oceanfront lands, we had to adjust to the close feeling of the hills and pine trees.

Our most memorable experience is the casual friendliness of the people, both in town and at Cold Spring Resort. At the barber shop, restaurants, church supper, grocery stores, and at the resort front desk, the folks had lots of helpful suggestions to make our week more enjoyable. Our unit was in the "Reach" section of the resort, a townhouse overlooking the golf course. Quality sliders to the decks kept out the below zero weather as we enjoyed a very wide view of mountains. The 1400 square foot unit is called a "two bedroom loft" 6/8, with one king and quality sleep sofa on the lower level, sharing one full bath. Upstairs is the loft with two twin beds and a desk, which I moved to face out the sliding glass door. Lovely place to catch up on correspondence. The second bedroom with two twin beds also has slider access to a sizeable deck, and shares the second full bath with the loft area.

The living room, dining room and full kitchen are one big open area, yet were always warm enough. There are two steps down to this area from the first floor entry and bedroom/bath area. I do not know if other units are more handicap accessible. Central to the great room is a round metal fireplace hanging from the ceiling. I believe there is a picture of it on Cold Spring's website. We brought artificial logs to burn with us, although they are not that expensive locally. (No wood allowed for safety sake.) The entry way is carpeted with the doormat kind of indoor/outdoor flooring. The rest of the unit has carpeting in excellent condition. Linoleum is in the kitchen and baths, with tile under the fireplace. The kitchen is well stocked with pans, utensils, and service for 8. A dishwasher, washer and dryer, and vacuum are in the unit. There is no maid service or towel exchange, which was just fine with me. At too many resorts, I have been frustrated by inadequate or delayed maid service. We can wash a towel or two to fill out a decent washer load. A screened porch faces the golf course and there is a front porch for skis and other "toys." Other units at the resort are across the street, in a more wooded area. All have screened porches; warm weather may bring bug issues. There is no air conditioning for any units, but fans are available. There is a cross country ski trail and skis and snowshoes are available to rent. An area is maintained for skating; guests should bring skates. The indoor and outdoor pools are well maintained, as is the entire resort. The "homey feel" of the building housing the front desk and recreation area was wonderful!

Well NH is not what you can call a wealth state in first place... the drive to the resort is actually pretty nice... the room is ok but not too clean... used carpet all over.. [more]
