Featured Review: Boardwalk Resort Hotel and Villas

We recently completed an exchange through II to the Boardwalk Resort and Villas in Virginia Beach, VA. While we've been to Virginia Beach several times over the last 10 years, this was our first visit to this resort. We had wanted to stay at this location in the past, but it has not been available. This time we had extended our request into September and we got Labor Day week.

Virginia Beach is a very nice town with much to do and see nearby. If the weather keeps you off the beach, there are many attractions within an hour's drive. In town are a large Aquarium and the Oceania Naval Air Base, which does offer tours. The Norfolk Naval base, Newport News, and various museums, and Zoo are all close by. The National Parks at Yorktown and Jamestown and several replica colonial ships as well as Colonial Williamsburg are also within the one hour distance.

The location of the resort is just about perfect. It's near the middle of town with easy walking or biking distance to most of the area. Virginia Beach's boardwalk is actually not a boardwalk at all. It's all cement and includes separate bike lanes away from the walkers. As a result, biking is allowed any time, unlike some other East Coast beach towns that have very restrictive morning biking hours. The boardwalk is lined with large hotels and resorts, some with restaurants or a few shops on the ground level. Most of the tourist shopping, quick food and other restaurants are on the main street in front of the hotels & resorts.

Check in time is listed as 5 pm. I had expected the room to be ready when we arrived about 4:15. But it wasn't so we did our grocery shopping and upon our return we received the keys. We had a 1-bedroom unit on the 10th floor. What a great view of the ocean and beach. I don't know if the units were converted from a hotel or built like this, but it was strange!

Walking into the unit we had a fully equipped kitchen with full size refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal and all necessary appliances. Service for 6 was provided. The dining area had a table that would seat 6 with a booth style seating on one side and 3 chairs on the other. The living area had an L shaped sofa facing a built in TV and the windows. One side of the sofa was also a pull out bed. This section of the unit was quite nice.

The bedroom was another story. There was a queen size bed, a small dresser, very small closet and another built in TV. There was a small balcony with 2 chairs and small table off this room. The large windows and door to the balcony had curtains on each side but blinds in the middle. Obviously east facing windows let quite a bit of early morning light through the blinds. The middle of the room had a sleeper sofa and coffee table. Then came the sink and shower/tub, with NO WALL or door to separate that area from the bedroom! There was a toilet room with a pocket door on the bed/bathroom side and another door to the kitchen side. The balcony would have been much more appreciated off the living room. It might have reduced the size of that room, but it still would have been plenty roomy. Doing away with the balcony in the bedroom would have made that room larger and could have accommodated a king size bed. There was no use for the sleeper sofa in the bedroom except they can say the unit could sleep 6 people. My wife was especially annoyed that apparently the last furnishing update left a terrible combination. The drapes in both rooms were a blue print and the furniture and carpeting were all green with a green print trim.

Overall the resort is nice. The staff is very friendly, check in and out were easy. There is a small indoor pool, hot tub, gym and attached seafood restaurant. There is no outdoor pool and they charge extra for WiFi and local calls. The one small closet had a safe, which you could use for an extra fee. Because of the unit layout I would not recommend, or want to again stay at, the one-bedroom units at this resort.
